The Valiant Thirteen

Thirteen Brave Women

Thirteen Stars,
Thirteen Stripes, and
Thirteen women
Stand for their country.

On July 3, 1777, all the men in Poultney, Vermont marched off to defend Fort Ticonderoga against the advancing British army. The men took all their weapons with them and left behind thirteen women and their forty-four children.

Three days later, on Sunday, July 6, a messenger arrived, announcing that British General John Burgoyne had broken through Fort Ticonderoga and the women and children must flee.
